Amitabha Buddha Thangka Introduction To The Thangka : Amitabha is also known as Amitayus, the great rescuer Buddha, in Mahayana Buddhism, notably in the Pure Land sects. Amitabha was never as popular as a savior figure in Tibet and Nepal as he was in East Asia, but he is respected as one of the five "self-born" buddhas (Dhyani-buddhas) who have existed forever.
