The name translates as "The Lord Who Looks Down with Compassion" or "The One Who Hears the Cries of the World." His primary hand gesture is teaching or holding a wish-fulfilling gem. Avalokiteshvara's essence stresses the loving ideal that underpins Buddhist practice: listening to the cries of sentient beings and acting with unbounded compassion to guide them to liberation from suffering.
