French Napoleon III Campan Grand Melange Marble Fireplace Surround
DETAILS This beautiful fireplace surround was hand fashioned of a very unusual marble; having rust-red and white striation on a mottled olive-gray ground known as Campan Grand Mélange. The Campan marble quarries are found in the High Pyrenees in France. A simple mantel with ovolu edge surmounts a straight apron with deeply incised paneling, flanked by incised blocks. The scrolled uprights feature a large acanthus leaf on each knee and griffe-de-lion feet, terminating on straight plinths.
