Blubber
Location: Poolepynten, SvalbardPrins Karls Land is a hot spot for Walrus hauled out on the spit of Poolepynten. During my expedition in Svalbard I was fortunate enough to pay these blubbery mammals a visit. After landing onshore we headed along the sandy coastline towards the haul-out. As we neared closer, a very distinct smell started to intensify. If you guessed it, yes, that stench would be walrus flatulence. We crossed to the eastern side to get the best angle on the walrus, carefully walking so we didn't disturb the nesting arctic terns – although one did dive bomb me a pecked me on the head. Slowly approaching our destination we were in luck. Over sixty individuals, all young males, lay sprawled out in the sun. Although rather dirty and smelly, walrus are hilarious to watch. The more time you spend with them the more you get to see their personality shine through as they flop around and squabble with one another Printed on premium quality Giclée Hahnemühle Photo Rag fine art pap
