Sleeping Giant
As the Ngāi Tahu legend has it while voyaging the seas, Aoraki, the eldest son of Rakinui (the Sky Father) and his three brothers were left marooned after their waka struck a rock. Time passed, The freezing wind turned them to stone. Their hair turned to white. They became Kā Tiritiri o te Moana – the highest peaks in the Southern Alps. Standing 3,724 metres tall is Aoraki / Mount Cook. New Zealand’s highest mountain. A tectonic giant covered in permanent ice and snow that stands humble, overlooking its rugged neighbouring peaks. Taken at 1800 metres from the Sealy Range, this photograph captures Aoraki on sunset during the spring months. Electric pink skies provide the backdrop to the dying sunlight, softly igniting Aoraki’s peak as the evening sets. Printed on premium quality Giclée Hahnemühle Photo Rag fine art paper.
