Fine 116pc English Sterling Silver Fiddle Flatware Set by Birks w Todd Crest
Presented is a wonderful English sterling silver 116 piece flatware set, made by Henry Birks & Son and dating to 1931. The set is made in a classic Fiddle pattern, with the distinctive shoulders above the bowls/tines and downward turned tips to the handles. Each piece is finely engraved with a crest of a fox sejant on a chapeau above the Latin motto “Oportet Vivere,” or “One must live.” This crest and motto are associated with the Todd family name. This is an impressive and well made set, serving nine with extras of many pieces. The demitasse spoons and dessert forks are made by International in the 1810 pattern, but match perfectly, as will many other makers' fiddle type patterns, so this is a very easy set to expand. The set consists of: 12 dinner knives—9 3/4 inches long. 12 luncheon knives—9 inches long. 11 butter spreaders—6 1/2 inches long. 9 dinner forks—8 1/8 inches long. 11 luncheon forks—7 1/8 inches long. 11 dessert/hors d'oeuvres/cocktail forks—5 5/8 inches long.
