The Confessions of St. Augustine

“The Confessions” is a book unlike any other book. It’s considered the first Christian autobiography in Western Civilization. But it defies categorization: it’s the story of a saint intensely in love with God, who looks back on his conversion and reflects on how God was at work through it all. He vividly describes his relentless search for truth, the roadblocks of his own sinfulness, his encounter with the bishop St. Ambrose, the steadfast prayers of his mother Monica, and how God’s grace finally brought him to the truth of the Catholic Faith. Along the way, he reflects on sin and vice, beauty, love, God’s providence, prayer and more. There’s so much to unpack in this rich and inspiring true story, but it can all be summed up in its most famous line: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
