This volume stands out for its quicker pace and heightened action, bringing significant physical transformations to the Turtles. Leonardo loses a hand, Raphael's face gets scarred, Splinter transforms into a bat, and Donatello turns into a cyborg. In a surprising turn of events, Raphael adopts the identity of The Shredder and takes command of the Foot Clan. In Volume 3, the Turtles become part of the Image universe, allowing for some crossovers and appearances from characters in the Savage Dragon series. The series stopped publishing in 1999. An episode from the 2003 animated series' third season titled "The Darkness Within" alludes to Raphael's portrayal as the Shredder, highlighting his fear of succumbing to rage and becoming the very entity he despises.
