John Coltrane: A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle
Impulse!, 2021 For decades, the only existing live recording of Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” was from a French festival in July 1965. So, the discovery of this thrilling performance of the full suite in a Seattle jazz club from October that year is a major addition to the saxophonist’s cannon. More than anything, it provides a vivid sense of the astonishingly rapid rate at which Coltrane was evolving in his final years. Less than a year after the original was recorded, it’s transformed into a turbulent, avant-garde maelstrom with additional bassist Donald Garrett adding extra heft and Pharoah Sanders contributing fiery tenor.
