Verve, 2018 On his debut album for the Verve label, the pianist, singer and bandleader on TV’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert gets serious and shows off his jazz chops. Here, he tackles an eclectic selection of tunes, including a version of Chopin’s “Nocturne No. 20 In C Sharp Minor” and the New Orleans jazz standard “Saint James Infirmary Blues,” while his originals reveal him to be a thoughtful composer and a gifted performer: “Mr Buddy” is a beautifully simple ballad and the instrumental “Kenner Boogie” mixes stride, ragtime and boogie-woogie to glorious effect.
