Solanum habrochaites Origin: Paradise, Utah Improvement status: Breeding population Seeds per packet: ~25 Germination tested 10/2024: 81% Life cycle: Annual Another exciting addition to the EFN catalogue care of Joseph Lofthouse of Paradise, Utah. From Joseph: "Closely related to domestic tomatoes, 'Neandermato' can act as a pollen donor to them. These are a green-fruited wild progenitor of "The Beautifully Promiscuous and Tasty Tomato Project." Multiple varieties were combined into a single population which was selected for ability to grow in short-season gardens. It has done well in both spring and fall frost/cold tolerance trails. It may contain other important traits that were lost during domestication of tomatoes. The stigmas are exerted for easier cross-pollination. This population seems self-incompatible, so a number of plants should be grown together for proper pollination. Some seeds may have been pollinated by other wild species, or by interspecies hybrids. Indeterminate." If any non-green fruits show up, Joseph would love seeds from them!
