Description Description Trilostane is an FDA approved medication used to treat Cushing’s disease (hyperadrenocorticism) in dogs and cats, and Alopecia X in dogs. It decreases the production of the cortisol hormone by blocking the enzyme needed to make it in the adrenal glands. Trilostane is a synthetic enzyme drug that does not cure the condition but can help manage it. Dogs usually respond to this medication therapy within two to four weeks. Your veterinarian will monitor your dog closely, especially at the start of the treatment. Trilostane is also used to treat Cushing’s disease in cats. While this disease is not common in cats, those with Cushing’s disease may also have underlying diabetes mellitus. Trilostane has not been proven to change their insulin needs. Trilostane can also be used for the treatment of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) in horses.
