PBY-5A Catalina, Battle of Midway, 80th Anniversary - Academy 12573 The legendary PBY Catalina was the most produced flying boat/amphibian in aviation history. It was characterized by a large, high wing and prominent tear-drop-shaped observation/gun positions on the fuselage. It also featured self-sealing gas tanks for added survivability. Beginning in 1941, the PBY became the standard reconnaissance aircraft of the US Navy and was used extensively by all the Allied air forces. The Catalina's primary mission was long-range patrol, and it was the Catalina that found and shadowed the Bismarck and a Catalina that spotted the Japanese aircraft carriers at Midway. Other missions included search and rescue, convoy escort, and anti-submarine patrols. This kit contains transparent and grey plastic parts to assemble PBY-5A Catalina in the edition honoring the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway with two finishing options in 1/72scale. The fully assembled model is 27.5cm long and 9cm tall.
