Space Shuttle & Booster Rockets - Academy 12707 NASA started Space Shuttle development in 1972, with the mission to create a reusable spacecraft that would connect Earth to its orbit. Starting with Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981, to its retirement in 2011, a total of 135 Space Shuttle launches were completed. Missions ranged from science experiments in built-in space laboratories to long-lasting contributions to building the International Space Station (ISS) by delivering and installing the space station's modular components, delivering and repairing space telescopes, and numerous satellite emissions. Sadly Columbia and the Challenger were destroyed in the explosion, but Atlantis delivered Magellan's Venus probe in May 1989, delivered Galileo's Jupiter probe in October 1989, and participated in the International Space Station assembly and resupply missions in 2000.
