A History of Jefferson County in the State of New York, From the Earliest Period to the Present Time; by Franklin B. Hough, A.M., M.D.; 601 pp; Originally published 1854, Reprint: 2005; Paperback; 6 x 9; Item # PRJ03 The author, Franklin B. Hough, holds the distinction of writing histories for several northern New York counties early in their history. His work for Jefferson County, published in 1854, contains over 600 pages (although it has no index, as was customary for that time period). Very thorough in his descriptions, Hough covers the pre-(white) settlement of the area, gives a separate chapter for each Town, records the establishment of churches, schools, railroads, associations, newspapers in addition to extensively reporting on the War of 1812 and the Patriot War of 1837. This book is a 'must-have' for understanding the area, time, and people. The book is softbound and looks like the original.
