Marking Sampler Dated 1903 Worked in Turkey Red Signed and Framed
What a fabulous Cross Stitched Sampler presented just in time for the holidays! This piece would make an incredible statement in your home because of the beautiful work, color and large size! This sampler is signed by Totoki Piroska and dated 1903. This talented maker executed the stitches with precise form and style. I believe this was worked on wool as the grid area has tiny boxes on a buttermilk cream ground. The turkey red wool thread used is striking against this neutral color! It appears she may have run out of the red as the bottom portion of the "q" was worked in mustard wool thread which continues to the end of the sampler. Something similar to the turkey tracks design appears at the top while the letters in the middle are bordered with an inverted "V" and chain stitch. There are also stylized designs added in the upper right hand corner and at the end of the alphabet as well. The frame was fashioned from pine and attractively boasts two knots on the front.
