Mortar and Pestle Circular Form Neat
This unusual mortar and pestle is such a delight because it does not take up much space and happens to exhibit a circular form that resembles a shallow bowl sporting a pronounced rim ledge. The surface on the mortar as well as the pestle lends a warm nutmeg hue that equates to exciting patina. Both of these pieces are in great condition without any chips or cracks to report. The subdued foot on the base of the mortar presents a nice feature. The pestle rests perfectly inside the mortar and is probably original. The incised double bands on the handle that lend a dark appearance are a wonderful contrast to the lighter wood surrounding this area. This pestle has a gentle bell shaped bottom and portrays a hand whittled (gouge) appearance from use as shown in images 8 through 10, compared to the smooth handle counterpart.
