Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium) is a colorful flowering shrub found in western North America's mountains. Similarly to goldenseal, it contains the chemical constituent known as berberine, making it an excellent substitute. Sustainably wild-harvested, the plant has rich golden-hued roots and root bark that can even be used as a yellow dye.
