Kennedy Tartan Kilt The Kennedy kilt has a rich history rooted in ancient Gaelic origins. The Kennedy family settled in Carrick, Ayrshire, under Gilbert, whose son Duncan became the 1st Earl of Carrick in the 12th century. Loyal allies of the Bruces, they supported the Wars of Independence. Gilbert's descendant, Lord Kennedy, elevated the family's status in 1457. Hugh Kennedy of Ardstinchar fought with Joan of Arc at Orleans. The 3rd Lord became the 1st Earl of Cassillis in 1509 but died at Flodden in 1513.
