Triceratops, meaning ‘three-horned face’, is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous, living about 68 to 66 million years ago alongside predators like T. rex. This massive herbivore reached lengths of up to 30 feet and weighed between 6 and 12 tons. Its three facial horns—two long ones above the eyes and a shorter one on the nose—were likely used in defense, display, and possibly combat with rivals. The large bony frill at the back of its skull may have protected its neck and served as a display structure for communication within the herd. Fossil evidence of healed wounds suggests Triceratops engaged in horn-to-horn combat. As one of the last great ceratopsians before the mass extinction, it represents both strength and resilience.
