Overhunting for their ivory tusks and oil has also contributed to their decline. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these large marine mammals that play a key role in the Arctic ecosystem. Walruses are indicators of the health of Arctic marine environments, and preserving their populations ensures the balance of the entire ecosystem.
