Costume designer Ann Roth selected specific textures and colours for each character to illustrate something about their personality — the seasoned office supervisor Violet (Lily Tomlin), the recently divorced and back-to-work Judy (Jane Fonda), and sweet southern secretary Doralee (Dolly Parton). Violet’s Asian-inspired kimono-styled jacket rings true: an aspiring career woman, strong minded but blocked by the sexist work practices of the time: totally on target.
