The flag of Indianapolis, adopted in 1963, is widely considered one of the best-designed city flags in the United States. Designed in 1962 by Roger Gohl as a class assignment, this flag has stood the test of time and has become an iconic symbol of Indy.  The design is centered around a white star, representing the Soldiers and Sailors Monument and the city's role as the state capital. The star sits inside a red circle, which symbolizes the vibrant heart of the city (Monument Circle). The dark blue field is divided by a white cross, representing the intersection of Meridian and Market Streets—the very center of Indy’s unique "Mile Square" grid. It’s a masterclass in vexillological simplicity, using the city's actual geography to create a bold, recognizable symbol of Hoosier pride.
