Walnut, Black

Juglans nigra, a large deciduous tree native to every state east of the Mississippi, and even extending into New Mexico and Colorado. Typically 50-60' in height at the maximum in New Mexico with a comparable spread. Growth is fairly fast in youth, slowing with age.  Bark is rich dark brown to gray-black. Nuts are delicious and highly prized for baking. The wood is beautiful and hard and is used in everything from furniture and gunstocks to turned bowls and veneers.
