Rhipsalis pacheco-leonis This rare epiphytic jungle cactus is endemic to Brazil, found in southern Minas Gerais and southern Espírito Santo along the coast to Rio de Janeiro, growing in southern humid forest from sea level up to 2,950 feet. Native to humid tropical scrub forest of the restinga in northeastern Rio de Janeiro state where it grows both as an epiphyte and lithophyte in sunny locations. It has also been recorded growing on the roofs of houses and on a cliff face. Unfortunately, it is threatened by habitat loss and listed as endangered by IUCN. This species is similar to Rhipsalis paradoxa and was even considered a dwarf form of that species for some time. The stems are slender with the familiar 'chain link' look of paradoxa but not as pronounced. Flowers and subsequent fruits are red, adding ornamental appeal to this distinctive cascading cactus.
