McKee Quilt

This quilt began as a playful exercise after a day of piecing half-square triangles - I needed a break - this colorful patchwork became a fun pick-me-up! It wasn't until the quilt was complete that I noticed the resemblance of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, a character from the children's book series written and illustrated by David McKee.  Elmer is an elephant with rainbow and white squares arranged as a patchwork. He has a cheerful and optimistic personality, and he loves practical jokes.   Each and every color in this quilt is hand-dyed with plants, using my best and brightest rainbow of botanical colors from many years of dye experiments.
