“Sailors Relieving Themselves,” George de Vertury. 1950.
Artist: George de VerturyDate: circa 1950s, possibly earlierMedium: watercolour and gouacheDimensions: 7.5" X 21.5"(print) 10”x22” (with frame)Format: reframed and matted Little is known about George Rollin de Vertury other than he was born in 1894 and made the “official” painter of the merchant marines in 1924. His wild and risqué works were usually early gouache prints which were then hand-coloured. He almost uniformly focused on sailors engaged in drinking, urinating, or in flagrant delicto. Because of the delicate paper that was used for these prints, and that they were often folded and kept in sailors’ backpacks as a souvenir, not many of de Vertury’s original works have survived. We discovered this one at a private estate and had it professionally rematted and reframed. Original print has some creasing and ageing to the paper.
