Shavegrass (Horsetail)
"Equisetum" cut and sifted it means "horse hair" in Latin and is also known as horsetail, snake grass or puzzle grass. It is the only living genus in Equisetaceae, a family of vascular plats that reproduces by spores rather than seeds. It is a "living fossil", the only living one of an entire species which for over 100 million years was much more diverse and dominated the the underwood of forests. Shavegrass is very diuretic and can help with bladder sludge or urinary problems. However, it should not be consumed in large quantities. Shavegrass is suitable for a proper Degu diet since their sensitive G.I. tracts are not used to wet and sugary food. They can become diabetics very easily. Degus originate from the arid plains of the Andes in Chile and should therefore be fed a variety of herbs, leaves, roots and some seeds. Even the most common pellets are questionable since all pellets are held together by some form of carbohydrates. Please keep always in mind when you serve your pet
