Winter Kitchen

My series Chambers is composed of large-scale watercolor paintings on paper. Stairway and Winter Kitchen are part of this series. Mt. Pleasant, an 18th-century Colonial mansion in Philadelphia, is the inspiration for the rooms. It is a place that is preserved much as it was when it was built some 15 years before the American Revolutionary War. The house provides a clean and direct connection to historical Colonial Georgian classicism and symmetry. In my paintings, veiled transparent washes contrast with super-saturated but still translucent pigment; nothing is impenetrable. A plum-violet ceiling and bright spring bud-green walls are jubilant fantasies.
