Underlying all special relationships is the belief that something is missing in us: that we have thrown away our innocence and destroyed the Love of God. The ego's way to escape the terror, anxiety, and pain of this inner lack is to fill this hole in our lives with special love and special hate relationships. These come in various shapes and sizes—variations on the theme of specialness. Understanding specialness is essential to understanding how the ego works.
