Nevada is called the “Battle Born State” because it became a U.S. state during the Civil War. Nevada was admitted to the Union as the 36th state on October 31, 1864, in the midst of the Civil War. The nickname “Battle Born” was coined at Nevada’s second constitutional convention in 1864, to reflect that its statehood was granted during that turbulent period.
