Send Aid to People and Pets in Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa Leaves Path of Destruction Hurricane Melissa, a rare Category 5 hurricane, made landfall in New Hope, Jamaica as one of the strongest hurricanes in history. UPDATE: Greater Good Charities' Disaster Team is in Jamaica now, working with local partners to assess needs and deliver aid where it is needed most. The powerful sustained winds of 185 mph tore off roofs, leveled homes, uprooted trees and left most of Jamaica without power, while the western side of the island is underwater. Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared the island a "disaster area" and said there is "significant damage". With communication down, the true extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa is still unknown.
