The Summer Solstice, (also called Midsummer) which falls between June 20-22 each year, marks the beginning of Summer. It is the longest day of the year, (and shortest night). This is both the peak of the sun's energy and the beginning of it turning over to night. From here, days will get shorter. The Summer Solstice has been celebrated for ages. Ancient Rome dedicated the summer solstice to Juno, wife of Jupiter, Goddess of women and childbirth. Vestalia, a week honoring the Goddess Vesta also took place is mid to late June. In Nordic countries, Freyr and Freyja were asked to bless the people with an abundant harvest. The Germanic people, Celts, Slavs and Baltics all had their own celebrations with very similar rituals. Certain Gods were honored, rituals for fertility, love, purification, and abundance all took place with bonfires, flowers, herbs, feasting, singing and dancing.
