“As You Wish” Ru Yis to make all your wishes come true The Ru Yi has long been a popular Chinese talisman that served as a ceremonial scepter in Imperial China, symbolizing power, authority and good fortune, and its image appears frequently in Chinese art. Its shape resembles that of a lingzhi, and over the ages, Ru Yis have been fashioned in materials of all kinds from precious metals such as gold and silver, to ivory, lacquer and jade. During the Zhou Dynasty, the Ru Yi represented light, re-generative power and fertility. In the Qing Dynasty, it became a symbol of political power. And in the modern day, Chinese businessmen and tycoons often display a Ruyi in the office to signify power, command and business success. Phonetically, the word “Ru Yi” in Chinese sounds like “According to one’s wishes”, or “As you wish”. The Ruyi is thus a wishfulfillings ceptre.
