The 2007-2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser has become a cult icon in the off-road community. Bred from a long line of four-wheel-drive vehicles designed to withstand the rigors of war, the FJ Cruiser is over-engineered in true Toyota fashion to be one of the best off-road vehicles of all time. But the one thing Toyota couldn’t engineer around is heat. The FJ’s 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 engine pumps out up to 278 lb-ft of torque and a lot of heat, especially when slowly crawling up steep rock faces. Low road speeds mean low airflow through the radiator, which makes expelling all that heat difficult. But after 13 years of trails and fording muddy water, low airflow can be compounded by clogged radiator fins.
