It is the Alsatian grape variety par excellence. Everyone agrees that the Rhine Valley is its cradle. Its culture dates back to Roman times. This variety quickly took the name of Riesling, a name that comes from riesen (which means to flow in German) because before it became acclimatized to the Alsatian climate, it was very sensitive to coulure (indeed, if the climatic conditions are bad, such as rain during flowering, the flowers fall). Somewhat different from its German cousin, Riesling from Alsace was established in our region from the end of the 15th century. It is frequently cited during the following centuries but it will be necessary to wait until the second half of the 19th century for its culture to develop. It was in the 1960s that it reached the forefront of production areas in Alsace.
