This hand-coiled Navajo basket by Sally Black is made entirely from traditional sumac. The yellow ring at the center represents the roots of the sacred corn plant, with a green corn stalk growing upward from those roots. This image of growth from a sacred foundation symbolizes a new beginning emerging from the traditional past.
