14k Gold and Sterling Silver Pendant Depicting Life Emerging from the Sipapu, on a 29” 14k Gold Handmade Hopi Link Chain. Created in 1976 by renowned Hopi artist Phillip Honanie (1950-2017), this extraordinary pendant stands over four inches tall and serves as the centerpiece of his “Emergence Jewelry” series. The design draws inspiration from Honanie’s 1975 painting The Beginning (see in photos) and symbolizes the Hopi creation story. At the center is Maasaw, the guardian of the Fourth World and keeper of the underworld, depicted with a hand-carved malachite face as he emerges from the Sipapu—the symbolic place of emergence. Surrounding him are First Man, First Woman, their children, and a Kwan (a priest of the One-Horn Society). Máasaw holds an ear of corn in one hand, while the other rests upon the head of First Man, symbolizing a blessing and connection to the people. A trail of cornmeal leads down his body to Sipapu.
