Zuni Knifewing Buckle

Sterling Silver Western-Style Belt Buckle with a Zuni Knifewing Design using Mosaic Inlaid Natural American Turquoise, made in 2003 by Zuni Silversmith Harlan Coonsis. On the back of the buckle is written, "Achiya La-da-ba", the Zuni name for the Knifewing, a legendary Zuni war guardian figure. In Zuni cosmology, the Knifewing (or war god) is believed to protect the Zuni pueblo from harm, often envisioned as dwelling in lakes in New Mexico and Arizona, emerging when needed to defend the people.
