Grace Turnbull, Dutch West Indies, c. 1913
A surprisingly vibrant and contemporary composition from Maryland listed artist Grace Turnbull (b. 1880- d. 1976). Born into a prominent Baltimore family, and educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Students League of New York. She has pieces housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Syracuse University, the Maryland Historical Society, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. This particular piece is unsigned, but was a part of her estate sale. It was likely painted during her stay in Windwardside, Saba, Dutch West Indies in 1913. Unsigned and not dated Medium: oil on linen Size of support: 25” x 37 3/16” Year of creation: c. 1913 Condition notes: Painting layer is freshly cleaned and a new varnish applied. Contemporary wax lining, some residual wax between original linen and lining layers. Losses throughout have been consolidated and inpainted. Original stretcher in good condition, missing keys have been replaced.
