Carved Horn Victorian Mourning Brooch

This brooch is an interesting example of Victorian mourning jewelry. An oval dome of blackish-brown horn has been carved into strange geometric forms. Horn was a popular material for use in mourning jewelry, it has the subtle, somber appearance appropriate to the genre. The brooch secures with the brass C-clasp pin common to the era.
