As legend has it, Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez came up with the idea for the Bucketheads while riding through Manhattan and listening to the radio. The Brooklyn-born DJ, already a New York house music star thanks to his production and remix work with “Little” Louie Vega (as Masters at Work), was unimpressed by the Euro-flavored dance records that were getting rotation and started digging in his own collection for the antidote to the tepid tracks coming from overseas. The result was the Bucketheads, an infectious blend of hip-hop, disco, funk and house influences that, like anything Kenny touches musically, simply could not miss. The single “The Bomb (These Sounds Fall into My Mind)” became an inescapable dance floor staple upon its release in summer 1995, dominating club rotations in the U.S. and scaling the charts across Europe, entering the Top 10 in the UK, France and Belgium.
