Oley Valley Pottery PA Redware Platter Sgraffito Horseman w/ Horn+Whip & Tulips
Description: A large (~12" diameter) round redware plate or platter, probably 1940s or 1950s, having a plain edge or rim. The plate which is glazed and has a typical Pennsylvania German yellow background. The plate has a sgraffito design depicting a man wearing s jacket and a hat riding a horse. The man is holding a horn in one hand and a whip in the other. The design is surrounded by sgraffito tulips on branches with leaves, The entire scene is surrounded with two linear circles with a wavy line between them having a repeating small design depicting clusters of leaves or grapes at set intervals. The edge of the yellow coloring has a dentilated edge reaching the plain rim. The plate or platter, which is rather shallow, is marked on the bottom with the words "Oley Valley Pottery, Pa" in two lines of block letters. The piece shows general overall crazing to the glaze with no evident losses to the glaze. This is a great looking, very unusual, and rather rare piece worthy of a spot in your
