These communities are descendants of the original Olmec and Mayan people of the greater region, who were the first to consume cacao as a ritual and celebratory beverage. The entire planet has these people and their ancestors to thank for all things cacao and chocolate, as they were the first to master the cultivation of the Theobroma cacao tree thousands of years ago.
