Smoke Bear Cycling Jersey& Bib Pants Smokey Bear was born on August 9, 1944, when the U.S. Forest Service decided that a fictional bear could be the symbol for their effort to prevent forest fires and hired artist Albert Staehle to paint the first poster. In spring 1950, fire fighters battling a forest fire in New Mexico found a bear cub who had taken refuge in a tree, was badly burned, but managed to stay alive. Moved by his bravery, the firefighters named him Smokey. News about Smokey spread across the US and he was given a home at the National Zoo. Smokey died in 1976 and was returned to New Mexico, where he is buried in the Capitan State Historical Park.
