This film was produced and distributed by First National Pictures, directed by Harry O. Hoyt, written by Marion Fairfax and adapted from Arthur Conan Doyle's 1912 novel of the same name. This film starred Wallace Beery, Bessie Love, Lewis Stone and Lloyd Hughes and featured pioneering stop motion special effects by Willis "Obie" O'Brien who would later achieve even greater recognition for his work on the 1933 film King Kong. The Lost World was the first feature-length film made using model animation as the primary special effect. Willis combined stop motion animation dinosaurs with live-action footage of human beings thus combining live-action and stop-motion footage in the same frame for the first time.
