OSPAAAL was founded in Havana at the 1966 Tricontinental Conference in Cuba with the stated purpose of promoting the causes of socialism and communism in the Third World. For this poster Martinez depicts what looks like an Alux figure from ancient Mayan mythology holding a modern military assault rifle with bayonet attached. The poster’s title Day Of Solidarity With Guatemala (February 6) is printed in Spanish, French and Arabic language along with English so the poster could be used internationally.
