Date: c.1932Artist: Brindle, Ewart MelbourneSize (in): 40” x 25”Size (cm): 101.6 x 63.5Condition: B-/C+Linen backed: YesThis vintage original and rare poster was created by the prolific Australian-American illustrator Melbourne Brindle for the Matson Line shipping company in the early 1930s. This poster advertises the Matson Line passenger service from Australia and New Zealand across the Pacific via America to England in 28 days. The poster isn’t dated but mentions the SS Mariposa and SS Monterey ocean liners which were part of the Matson Line "White Fleet" with both ships taking maiden voyages in early 1932 so thus a c.1932 date seems about right.Brindle was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1904 and immigrated to the United States as a teenager. Brindle’s long and successful career as an illustrator included creating covers for the Saturday Evening Post magazine and working for major clients like Douglas Aircraft, United Airlines and automakers Ford, General Motors and Chrysler.
