The supreme purpose in life is to be in right relationship with God. He gave the law in order to convince everybody that without Christ, they're absolutely lost and hopeless and doomed. For it is impossible to perfectly keep the law by our own efforts. The law demonstrates the exceeding sinfulness of sin and functions as our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ for salvation.
