THE STORY BEHIND THE SCULPTUREThe original painting depicts the sculpture of "Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss" done by Antonio Canova that can be found in Paris, Musee du Louvre. The winged man is the god Eros (Cupid in Latin) and he lands on a rock by an unconscious girl and her name is Psyche. Cupid's mother Venus (Goddess of Love and Beauty) demanded that Psyche brings back a flask from the Underworld, strictly forbidding her to open it. But Psyche's curiosity got the better of her, and as soon as she opens it she breathes in the terrible fumes and than she fell into deep, deathlike sleep.
